Before the start of the main round duel Handball-EM between Iceland and Germany (live at Dyn/Advertisement, ZDF and HERE in the live ticker) there was a mega breakdown in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. Because of a computer blackout, an incorrect version of the anthem was accidentally played instead of the Icelandic national anthem.
Clearly visible on TV: The Iceland professionals initially try to sing along, but then look at each other irritated. The embarrassment is quickly apparent. Some players shrug their shoulders.
Handball European Championship: Mega breakdown before Germany game! Suddenly the “wrong” anthem plays
What was going on there? For the listeners in front of the television and for the 19,750 spectators in the sold-out hall, it seemed as if it had been completely distorted and played back at a higher speed.
Afterwards, the jury is shown on TV, where those responsible try to solve the problem quickly. An announcement from the stadium announcer also follows.
The whole arena roared and clapped for Iceland. After a short time, the arena DJ probably received the correct anthem digitally and then played it. National coach Alfred Gislason (64) also sang the real anthem in the first competitive game against his home country.
1. FC Union Berlin has signed Chris Bedia from Servette Geneva. Just a few hours after the Bundesliga club announced the departure of Sheraldo Becker to Real Sociedad San Sebastian, the Berliners presented a successor to last season’s top scorer.
“Chris is a big and powerful offensive player who can help us in attack with his physicality and goal threat,” Union manager Oliver Ruhnert was quoted as saying in a club statement. The fact that the Berliners could really use a new striker has not only been true since Becker’s departure. Union has been having a very difficult time offensively all season. Kevin Behrens has been waiting for a goal since August, the top scorer is Robin Gosens, a nominal defensive player.

“It has always been a dream for me to play in one of the big leagues. I want to help the team with my strengths and hope to be able to contribute a few goals to their success and help Union stay in the league,” said Bedia. The striker could be in the Union squad for the first time next Wednesday in the catch-up game in Munich. Berlin’s away game in Mainz planned for Friday has been canceled due to the weather.
