Do you know how to say “go” in English? In the language, there are some rules that need attention so you don’t make mistakes when writing or talking! Therefore, Yázigi prepared this post explaining the difference between been and gone to make this matter clearer. Check out!
been
The past participle of the English irregular verbs to be preceded by the auxiliary has been translated into Portuguese, which is equivalent to “is” or “for”. It is used in situations where a person has already been to such a place at some point and returned, such as a trip or trip, for example, but it does not specify when.
Have you been to Tokyo? – Have you ever been to Tokyo?
We’ve been to Paris twice. – We’ve already been to Paris twice.
I’ve been there before. – I’ve been there before.
He’s been to Australia. – He’s been to Australia before.
gone
This is the past participle of the verb to go, and when it is used after the auxiliary has, its Portuguese translation is equivalent to “for”. It is used when someone has gone to a place but has not yet returned:
They’ve gone to California. – They went to California.
He’s gone to Italy. – He went to Italy.
Gone gives an idea of continuity of action and can appear in situations when a person moves permanently to another place:
My cousin has gone to Argentina and she’ll be living there now. – My cousin went to Argentina and will live there now.
He needs to accept that she’s gone. – He has to accept that she’s gone.
BONUS: went
Similar to gone and been, we have went, the simple past of the verb to go. We use this term to say that a person went to a place at some specific time.
She went to the beach last summer. – She went to the beach last summer.
I went to New York in 2013. – I went to New York in 2013.
Went does not ask for the have/has helpers, unlike been and gone. It covers an action that started in the past and ended in the past, as well as mentioning when. See more examples:
I went to my mother’s house last weekend. – I went to my mom’s house last weekend.
She went there in spring. – She went there in the spring.
It’s not difficult, right? Practice English a lot and remember to apply these rules when using the verb “is”! Stay tuned to our blog to read more posts about the English language:
