The history of ERA calculators

There was a time in history when simple arithmetic was required in school. As technology has emerged, new discoveries have rapidly changed the way we use traditional methods. One of these great inventions was the calculator. Modern calculators are different from old counting instruments. Numerical devices like abacuses and comptometers were an error-ridden and rather tedious manual process. In contrast, modern calculators are digital or solar powered and do not require much manual work. They are very cheap and come in many sizes and models. Here are seven lucky facts about ERA calculators that you should know:

In education
1. There was a lot of resistance to the use of calculators in school, because it was thought that it would diminish their basic math skills.
2. Scientific research shows that insufficient guidance when using calculators can make it difficult for students to learn mathematical thinking. On the other hand, others question that math devices can weaken basic math skills or that such use can make it difficult to learn important math concepts.

History: the early days
3. The first type of calculator to be introduced was the Abacus. They were made of a square-shaped piece of wood with beads that slide up and down on wires. The Abacus is still used by traders and fishermen in Africa and Asia.
4. The first recorded analog computer was in 150 BC. It was called the Antikythera Mechanism and the Astrolabe. These calculators are made in Greece.

In the early 1980s, computing devices were a luxury item costing about two weeks’ wages. Prices fell as the cost of building materials for these devices became cheaper and more accessible.
Nowadays, it is difficult for manufacturers to make a good profit just by selling calculators. Consequently, companies have competed to find unique strategies for selling computer equipment.
