Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an Indian Politician and the First Deputy Prime Minister of India. His full name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel. He participated in the country’s struggle for independence and contributed a lot in bringing prosperity and peace in the nation. Early life and Career:
Patel was born on 31 October 1875 at Nadiad, Gujarat. He belongs to a landowning family of Leva Patidar community and his father name was Jhaverbhai Patel. He has grown in the traditional Hindu atmosphere. He has taken admission in a school in Nadiad and completed his class 10 at the age of 22. He then passed the district pleaders exam which allowed him to practice law. With his savings, he traveled to England to become a lawyer. Away from his family and wife, he studied law and got his degree in two years.
After returning, he builds an independent office in Godhra, Gujarat in 1900. He presented himself as a challenging lawyer and helped people in solving their query. But in 1908, Patel lost his wife. She was a cancer patient and died during surgery. He then continues his career as a legal professional and traveled to London to study in 1910.
His Political Career:
He was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and found a drastic change in himself. In 1917, Patel has given an encouraging speech to motivate Indians towards independence. The satyagraha movement was their next step in freedom struggle which Patel led in the absence of Gandhi. He was involved in resolving the social, political and economic problems of people. Patel started a village-to-village tour to make people aware and refuse them to make payment of taxes. He supported Bapu’s Non-cooperation movement and traveled around the nation to recruit over 300,000 members. He planned many campaigns and set up health labs to benefit rural Indians.
Quit India Movement:
In 1931, Patel became Congress president for Karachi sittings. He supported Jawaharlal Nehru’s decision to remove Congress from the central assembly. He was sentenced to 9 months of prison in 1940. He gave a speech at the Gwalia Tank land and begins the civil disobedience movement all over the nation.
Unification after Independence:
In the 1946 election, Patel was supporting Nehru. After becoming the first Home Minister of India, Patel played a significant role in the unification of small princely states. He worked to fill the gap between Hindu and Muslims and bring equality in the nation.
