How to raise children who love Quran
I believe that our children should love the Quran and Sunnah, rather than being forced to learn it.
Fears can make us hate something. Never tell your children to pray and study Quran or they will be sent to hell. It’s simply wrong. Instead, talk to them about the virtues that come with learning the Quran and praying five days a week.
My children are a 12-year-old son and two younger girls, 6 and 8. The older two are learning the Quran (Alhamdulillah), while the little one is finishing her Qaida. My son was educated at Madrasah, but I teach my daughters at home.
I’m not perfect and don’t know everything. I am a passionate mother trying to find the best way to raise my children in the Quran’s light. As a guide, I share my experiences and tips. If you’re in the same place as me, I hope you can find answers to your questions.
Have fun learning Quran!
Children are often small and between 3 and 6 years old. They need to be able to learn through fun methods. This is why it is important to find a teacher that understands the child. Take a look at their calendar. Don’t over fill it. You can come up with creative solutions if things don’t work out.
My little girls weren’t happy with their teacher a few years back. Let me tell you about the story and how it was solved.
There were many tears, not only for the children but also for the parents. I felt like a terrible mom. Hubby and I would drive home together after dropping them off with guilt every day.
Both of us agreed that this isn’t how Quran study should be. We both agreed that they should have formal training in Tajweed and proper pronunciation.
Saudi Arabia was my home and I received Quran education. My parents sent me to Quran School, and Quran classes as a child, but also as an adult. This was something I believed I could do. My husband received all of his Islamic education from his mother at home. It was possible, I believed it.
I wanted to teach my children Qaida at my home, just as my mother-in-law had taught me and my siblings. Although I believed I could teach them, my husband felt that Tajweed should be taught to children in a Madrasa.
We decided quickly to pull them out so that I could teach them the Qaida nooraniya at home.
It was the best decision I have ever made. They were able to literally learn the Holy Quran directly from my lap.
You can teach the Quran from your lap if you have a child who is hesitant to learn it.
At that time, my daughters were 5 and 6. Our 15 minute reading time was a favorite with them. They loved the idea of sitting on my lap and reading the Qaida. They loved the idea of Mom’s little princess sitting on my lap to read the Qaida.
That’s how we learned the Quran on our mother’s lap.
My children and I used to study the Quran every day between 4-5pm rights after Asr.
In the first ten minutes, I would read my Quran pages. Then, anyone who was willing to learn her lesson would sit down on my lap and read to my.
After she was done, her second daughter would sit down on my lap to read. After lessons, we would make dua, memorize 2-3 lines from a Surah, and call it a success!
I noticed that my children began to associate Quran learning and love with one-on-one time with their mother.
If your child is hesitant to learn Qaida, you might consider teaching them from your lap.
These are some of the most common questions I receive regarding teaching children Holy Quran.
What age should I begin teaching my children Quran?
There is a difference between memorizing and learning the Quran. It’s like learning to read in one language and then being able to write in another.
Children may not be able to memorize the same songs and rhymes in another language as they are able to memorize. However, learning how to read the Quran is best done when your children are ready to write, which will be around 3-5 years old.
As young as 18 months, you can begin teaching children small duas or Surahs. I used to take them into my lap and cuddle them, then we would say the nighttime duas and Surahs.
When I was pregnant with my children, my husband would lay down beside me and cuddle our son. My son began to associate bedtime prayers and my father praying with me as quality one-on-one time. He would proudly recite all he had learned throughout the day.
When you are pregnant, listen to the Quran.
When I was pregnant with my children, I would listen at night to the Quran to help me fall asleep. I used to listen to the Quran all day during Ramadan. Surah Yusuf and Surah Maryam were my favorite. Surah YaSeen, Surah ArRehman, Surah Maryam and Surah YaSeen were also good.
My babies were born when I discovered that putting on the Quran would calm my fussy children. As they grew up, I found that they remembered the Surahs I had listened too often and they were able to recall them quickly.
The moral of the story: If you’re an expectant mother play the Quran loudly whenever you hear it. Your unborn baby will listen!
